Breakfast at Tiffany’s

No, my Audrey was not named after Audrey Hepburn.  But I’ve always been a big Hepburn fan and Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of my all-time favorite movies.  So I guess Miss Hepburn probably played some part in the naming of my daughter.  I still sing Moon River to Audrey at bedtime.

Tutus and Tatu

My friend and computer guru, Tracey, suggested I sign up for Facebook last fall and I just couldn’t see the attraction.  Being something of an old fart, I had the idea that FB was something like YouTube or MySpace, the domain of spotty teenagers and lonely, scary men trolling for spotty teenagers.

Planet Bombay

After Monday’s romp through the Buford Highway Farmer’s Market, we were all in the mood for something hot and spicy and decided on Panahar, a Bangladeshi restaurant out on the highway.  Alas, Panahar is closed on Mondays.  So we headed back to town and hit one of Amy and Ted’s favorite Indian restaurants, Planet Bombay, located [...]

Buford Highway Farmer’s Market

Oh…my…God!  Or as Audrey would say, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG!!!  I am in heaven and it’s not fair that Bones isn’t here with me.  We went to the Buford Highway Farmer’s Market last night and I am (almost) speechless.  They have a better variety of Caribbean food than we get in Tortola.  They have ugly [...]

Queen Bee Cupcakes

I’m always in awe of anyone who knows what they want to do and then has the guts to totally change their life and do it.  Jennifer Green, proprietor of Queen Bee Cupcakes, is one such person.  Jennifer was in marketing in a previous life but somewhere along the line decided she wanted to bake cupcakes.  [...]

Stone Mountain Photo Album

I was worred about getting enough exercise while on vacation.  I needn’t have been concerned.  On Sunday, after consuming the better part of a Southern breakfast that could have fed a family of four, I decided to walk to the top of Stone Mountain.  Many of our fellow travelers seemed to opt for taking the tram [...]

I’m a big fan of Scott Peacock and the late, great Edna Lewis.  Their valentine to Southern food, The Gift of Southern Cooking, is a well-thumbed-through favorite in my cookbook collection (their chutney recipe alone is worth the price of the book).  So I jumped at the chance to have Sunday brunch at Mr. Peacock’s restaurant, [...]

Bathrobe Guy

I had to share this photo taken by my friend, Sue, a few weeks ago at Anegada (my favorite island in the BVI).  We certainly do get some characters passing through the islands.  Whilst at Anegada, Sue shot this photograph of a gentleman walking up the dock…we’ll call him Bathrobe Guy.  Apparently Bathrobe Guy came up on a boat [...]

BVI BBQ Grill-Off

I wasn’t sure if we would get to this year’s BVI BBQ Grill-Off, held last Saturday, July 4, down at Brandywine Bay.  But by about ten in the morning the smell of barbecued meat wafting up from Brandywine made it hard to think straight and over the hill we went.

Fireball Full Moon Party

A concrete truck took out the phone lines here on Sleepy Hill so I’ve been without internet for several days.   And so goes life in the Caribbean.  I’m finally back on line and able to report on Tuesday’s Fireball Full Moon Party at Trellis Bay on Beef Island.

Rhubarb Blackberry Crumble

I was surprised and delighted to find rhubarb stalks at our local supermarket the other day.  Surprised because rhubarb is a northern plant, needing a temperature of below 40° F to break dormancy in the winter and not surviving well when temperatures get about about 75° in the summer.  So we can be assured my rhubarb was not [...]

Mango Season

“The flavor is as though nightingales were singing on the palate.  The texture is like cream melting on the tongue.  What the gods gorged on, on Olympus, is called nectar and ambrosia, but mangoes are plainly meant.”  Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
