About Sugar Apple
In the kitchen with Audrey and a bit of local pork
Welcome to Sugar Apple!
I’m Abigail Blake, a native North Carolinian and former stage manager, New Yorker, event planner and trust officer. I met my future husband, Bones, on nickel beer night at Pusser’s Pub while vacationing in the British Virgin Islands. He spent a quarter, got me drunk and thought I was a cheap date. I moved to the BVI a few months later and 17 years down the road, I’m still here. I only recently told my parents that my husband is called Bones, preferring instead the more parent-friendly name of Anthony.
My hobbies are cooking, eating, drinking, reading and writing it all. I’ve written articles for the BVI Welcome Magazine, the BVI Restaurant Guide and the Limin’ Times and I wrote a food column in The Islands’ Nautical Scene. Through the joys of redundancy, I am now able to concentrate on my hobbies on a more or less full-time basis, with a bit of time off to spend parenting the very lovely and very lively Audrey, aged 12.
I feared my Facebook friends would quickly tire of hearing what I’m cooking for dinner and how nice the weather is in the Caribbean. So I launched the Sugar Apple blog to keep readers posted on the joys of life, love and cooking, island-style. I’ll also take you along when I go on the road – Italy, Mexico, Paris, Atlanta and NC so far. Trinidad and Mexico are on the calendar for this year and England and Italy (again) in 2011. Even if we only get as far as my balcony overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel, I guarantee a good time. Our neighbor says our balcony is evil, but it’s really just badly behaved at times.
My kitchen may be in the islands but my food is all over the map. You’ll find out how to make dishes from the Caribbean, Italy, Israel, India, France and (of course) the American South. You’ll find recipes for a cocktail or two. I love rum, bourbon and wine…lots of wine. I cannot imagine a life without homegrown tomatoes, scotch bonnet peppers and iced tea. I wish lunch could last forever.
I love to hear from readers and my email address is abigail (AT) abigailblake (DOT) com – feel free to contact me (you’ll need to put that in standard email format). In the meantime, welcome to my kitchen.
Note: I know the photo is a bit old but I hate being photographed so this is the most recent “kitchen” photo I could root out. I also know my bra straps are showing.

Great site Abi, even Shorty likes it
Abigail, I love your site but it is making me hungry, which I gather is the idea. Keep the recipes coming- and the views. Kate and I need to find a way to bring the kids out there asap!
Wow, Abigail, this is amazing! Making me sooo want to get back…
Thanks Elise. Maybe we will actually get to spend time with you if you return!
Hi Abigail. Nice to see you dropping by my (so not updated) blog. Will add you to my list of foodbloggers in the Caribbean. At least that I update
Thanks Chennette! It was good to find your blog and I look forward to checking out some of the others on your list.
Great site Abigail. Thanks for pointing out the bra… this style is in by the way. LOL. I can’t wait to try out some of your recipes, although I could hardly cook. For now I make salads… and sandwiches.
Anyhow, do check out my favorite website, sparkpeople.com. You can find me by searching for IRIESAXI. The site is all about making healthy choices – weightloss, challenges, support, motivation and learning how to eat a balanced diet (making sure we include some of all the right stuff daily).
Abigail, your site is lovely and Audrey is so adorable! Life in the Caribbean Island and sea trips sound so spectacular! Love the food that you make too! What a pleasure to share with you!
Thanks for your kind words. Life out here is really pretty good and I love sharing it. Glad you like the site.

Only Southern Belles worry about bra straps – I’m right with you, hon. It seems like that old trainin just never leaves – I still can’t chew gum !!! Congrats to you on this clever and informative website. Really great.
Does Audrey still have the picture of the little girl that I painted for her when she was born? She is a real young lady and the exact age of my granddaughters whom I am really enjoying.
Hats off to you. I am subscribing right now. We miss the BVI but it is great to be reunited with my sons and their families.
Love ya,
Nanc
We miss you too but I’m sure you’re enjoying your family. And you’ve really only traded one island for another. Once an island girl…just like the Southern thing. My mama still won’t work in the yard on Sundy.
Audrey does have the picture and it’s hanging on our wall in a place of honor. And she’s fantastic.
Abby – I know that this reply is really late but I cannot begin to tell you how very flattered I am that Audrey still has the picture that I made for her many years ago. Thank you for posting that – you always were a very special Southern Belle. Love to you all, Nanc
Abigail – rode the ferry back to Tortola with Bones yesterday; he told me of your venture and gave me your card. I was very happy to hear you’re writing again and have spent the last couple hours bouncing around your various posts. Fantastic, thanks for sharing.
Now, when is your first novel coming out?
Benson
Thanks Benson…so far no fiction but I’ll let you know.
Abigail , I just discovered your blog and I love it!!
Hi I was wondering if there is anyway that I can use your eggplant choka pic on my site please? I am doing a website about Trinidad and I can’t find a decent one anywhere. I will upload it on my server of course and take no credit for the pic if you let me.
Hi. I am a friend of Bones from Florida. I’m was looking forward to visiting you all soon in the BVI, but now that I see the food that you are eating, I really can’t wait!
Hope to see you soon,
Stephen
Hi Stephen,
We hope to see you here in the BVI soon!
Cheers,
Abigail

Abigail, any recommendations for restaurants on Virgin Gorda. We’ll be there for 9 days next month and would love to hear about what you like there!
Hi Abigail,
Nice blog you’ve got here. Thanks for dropping by. Another beautiful Caribbean blog for me to read. Take care

Hi Abigail,
I stumbled upon your blog when checking Michael Ruhlman’s website.
When you Audrey and Bones were in Italy in 2008 I was working as a private chef for Simon and Barbara. I have great memories of my time working there.
Check out my blog about my recent trip to South America.
Right now I am in Boston studying for a Master Degree in Gastronomy.
Send my regards to Bones and to Audrey.
Cheers,
Alex
Ciao Alex! So glad you found the blog. We all remember you well when you were cooking in Italy, both privately and at Zeppelin in Orvieto. You introduced me to fresh truffles for which I’ll always be grateful.
Good luck with your studies and you know where to come if you want a Caribbean holiday. And I’ll definitely be checking out your blog.
